Three weeks ago, Semrush, a $471M ARR company built entirely on the SEO paradigm, stopped calling itself an SEO company.
In a March 12th announcement on Business Wire, they introduced their new term: “Agentic Search Optimization.” Their CMO Andrew Warden put it plainly: “You’re either the answer AI provides, or you’re invisible.”
That same week, Capxel launched “AI Search Optimization” as what they called “a new category of brand intelligence.” BrightEdge shipped “AI Hyper Cube” and a new “AI Agent Insights” capability. Three major players. Three new terms. One week.
Every one of them is right about something. None of them named what’s actually happening.

Three different angles. Three different tools. One underlying shift.
When an industry produces three competing terms in the same month, it isn’t confused. It’s converging. The players can feel that discovery has fundamentally changed. The problem is they’re each describing a different piece of the elephant.
Semrush focuses on agents: AI systems searching on your buyer’s behalf. Capxel focuses on machine-readability at the infrastructure level. BrightEdge focuses on the measurement layer: BrightEdge research found that in some industries, the top five sources account for more than a quarter of all AI-generated brand recommendations, with citation visibility shifting by as much as 100% month-to-month. That’s a real and urgent measurement problem.
But none of these companies are describing a discipline. They’re describing product capabilities.
And that shift didn’t start with agentic AI. Gartner projected in 2024 that traditional search volume would decline 25% by 2026 due to AI chatbots and virtual agents. That projection has largely arrived. It started the moment AI systems began mediating what information buyers encountered first, not when Semrush decided to rebrand.
Here’s the problem with “Agentic Search Optimization” as a category name: it defines the problem by the mechanism (agents) rather than the relationship (machines as the new audience for your editorial presence).
When Semrush calls something Agentic Search Optimization, they’re describing what their tool does. That’s a product definition, not a discipline definition. Product definitions don’t age well. In 18 months, the agents will work differently. The term will be stale, or it will require another rebrand.
The same trap applies to GEO, AEO, AI SEO, and LLMO. Each one optimizes for the mechanism visible from inside that company’s product. None of them names the underlying principle.
The underlying principle is this: earned authority in publications that machines already trust is how brands get cited, recommended, and compared by AI systems. Research from Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse found that over 82% of all links cited by AI engines are earned media — not owned content, not ads, not schema markup. Academic research by Aggarwal et al. at Princeton and Georgia Tech (SIGKDD 2024) confirmed that adding original statistics increases AI visibility by 30-40%. And Ahrefs’ analysis of ChatGPT citations found that 65.3% of cited pages come from DR80+ domains — authority earned through editorial relationships, not technical optimization.
That finding doesn’t change when the agent paradigm evolves. The signal AI systems use to evaluate brand authority — third-party editorial presence in publications they already trust — is stable. What isn’t stable is the terminology the toolmakers use to describe it.
Semrush’s rebrand is a market indicator, not a competitive threat. When a NYSE-listed company with 28 million users rewrites its identity around AI brand visibility, the category isn’t emerging anymore. It’s arrived.
The architecture of where they land is telling. They describe the new product as “the combination of SEO and Agentic Search Optimization.” That’s bolting a new frame onto an old one. It’s what you do when you recognize the shift but can’t fully name it from inside your existing product architecture.
Harvard Business Review’s March 2026 issue ran a piece called “Preparing Your Brand for Agentic AI.” The core finding from Pernod Ricard’s head of digital tracks with what every AT client discovers in their first audit: AI models often have incomplete or incorrect data about your brand, and no amount of SEO work fixes it. The input that fixes it is editorial presence in publications the model learned to trust.
The reason terms keep proliferating is that everyone’s building a product before anyone built the vocabulary. You can’t sell a discipline without naming it. So each company names what their product does, and the market ends up with another island.
This matters beyond semantics. When the vocabulary is fragmented, so is the strategy. Founders and CMOs trying to figure out where to invest get three different frameworks from three different vendors, each implying different actions. The underlying answer — get earned media in trusted publications — is the same in all three cases. But it gets buried under product-specific language designed to justify a SaaS contract.
Moz’s 2026 analysis of 40,000 AI Mode queries found that 88% of AI Mode citations don’t appear in organic top-10 results. Bain found that 80% of search users now rely on AI summaries at least 40% of the time. The shift is real. It’s structural. It’s not a product feature.
Every time a Semrush, a Capxel, or a BrightEdge launches a new term for this shift, they add another data point proving the shift is real and needs a unified name. Their content, their announcements, their customer success stories: all of it confirms that earned media in trusted publications is the mechanism driving AI citation. They’re building the evidentiary case without holding the frame that explains all of it.
Machine Relations is the discipline that connects what they’re all building toward. Not because it’s a better product (AT doesn’t sell software) but because it’s the only frame that starts from the correct foundational principle: machines are now the primary readers of the editorial record you’ve spent years building, and they read it the same way they learned to in training — from the publications that already carried editorial weight.

Layer 1 — Earned Authority — has been the stable foundation the whole time. What changed is that the rest of the market is now building tools to measure the thing that earned media has always delivered.
That’s not a threat. That’s confirmation.
The brands that show up in AI-generated vendor briefs, category comparisons, and buyer research aren’t the ones who updated their schema last quarter. They’re the ones with coverage in the publications that AI training data treated as ground truth — earned through a direct editorial relationship, not a monitoring dashboard. Understanding which publications drive citation in your category is the decision that precedes every tool choice.
