A survey published this month by Marketing Against the Grain puts pressure on that goal — and the execution implications run deeper than most teams have caught up with yet.
Marketing Against the Grain surveyed more than 200 B2B decision-makers about how they engage with AI search in the purchase process. Two numbers from the survey define the problem with the “primary pick” strategy:
42% of buyers say a brand feels more trustworthy when AI recommends it. They assume the AI has vetted it. They aren’t skeptical about manipulation — they treat the citation as earned.
But 35% of buyers most remember favorable comparisons when they recall a brand from an AI answer — not singular top picks. That’s a 14-point gap between what buyers trust and what they retain and act on.
The survey also tracked what buyers do after seeing a brand in an AI answer. The top action wasn’t clicking to the brand site. It was noting the brand for further evaluation — adding it to a shortlist. AI answers are building shortlists, not generating immediate clicks. And the framing that sticks on those shortlists is “better than X for Y,” not “AI named us first.”
The practical implication: your brand being cited once as a primary recommendation doesn’t do the same pipeline work as your brand being cited in the frame that buyers write down and bring into the evaluation process.
Most AI citation advice focuses on entity clarity, schema markup, and answer-first structure — all necessary. But this survey surfaces a different problem: the frame your brand appears in inside AI answers matters as much as whether you appear at all.
When a B2B buyer searches “best [category] platform for mid-market teams,” AI engines don’t pick one winner. They synthesize and compare. According to the Marketing Against the Grain data, comparison framing dominates buyer recall by 14 points precisely because that’s the dominant format AI uses to answer category-level research questions.
If your content is built to generate primary citations — you’re being mentioned once, briefly, alongside competitors whose content is feeding comparison frames and staying in the buyer’s shortlist notes. The content strategy mismatch is structural.
This holds under the data on how AI actually selects content. According to Moz’s 2026 analysis of 40,000 AI Mode queries, 88% of AI Mode citations don’t appear in the organic top 10 search results. AI isn’t pulling the highest-ranked brand pages. It’s pulling from the broadest trusted source pool — and the content it pulls for comparison queries needs comparison language to cite.
Step 1: Audit your actual citation frame
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Run the 10 most commercially valuable queries in your category — not branded queries, category-level ones: “best [category] for [your ICP],” “how to choose [your category],” “[your category] platforms compared.”
For every response where your brand appears, note: is it a primary recommendation (named first or as “the best option”) or a comparison citation (named in contrast to an alternative, highlighted for a specific use case, or framed as “better for X than Y”)?
Most teams find their citations already skew toward comparison framing naturally — because that’s how AI systems answer category queries. The question is whether your content is feeding that framing with the language you’d choose, or whether AI is constructing comparisons from fragments of your generic marketing copy.
Step 2: Count your differentiator language
The Marketing Against the Grain research is specific about what drives favorable comparisons: content that explicitly positions your brand relative to alternatives, with enough specificity that AI has something to cite.
Go through your top five landing pages and case studies. Count how many times you name a specific use-case advantage relative to an alternative. If that count is zero, you don’t have comparison content. You have brand copy that AI can’t use in the format buyers retain.
“We help teams move faster” — AI can’t build a comparison from that. “Unlike [category] platforms built for enterprise deployment cycles, [your brand] is designed for teams that need to be live in under two weeks without a dedicated ops hire” — that’s a citable claim that AI can surface when someone asks about implementation timelines.
The difference is specificity: named use case, named alternative condition, verifiable advantage.
Step 3: Publish one comparison-structured piece this sprint
Not a “we’re better” page. A structured answer to a comparison question your buyers actually ask AI. Format it as a buyer would search it: “How does [your product] approach [specific use case] differently than the [category] standard?” Answer it in the first paragraph — direct, specific, no preamble. Include sub-headers for each comparison point with concise answer blocks underneath.
The Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO research found that adding statistics to content improves AI citation probability by 30-40%. Within comparison content, that means using your own client data, implementation numbers, or benchmark metrics. “Our clients typically see time-to-value drop from 90 days to under 30” is citable. “We make implementation faster” is not.
The shortcut version of this advice is “build a competitor comparison page.” That usually produces either an attack piece or a feature matrix — neither of which AI cites favorably for the queries that matter.
Comparison content that stays in AI citation pools isn’t positioning. It’s documentation. Buyers in the 42% who trust AI citations are trusting them precisely because they believe AI is surfacing genuine third-party assessment, not vendor pitch content. The comparison frames that survive AI engine filtering are the ones that are specific, acknowledge trade-offs, and give the buyer clear use-case guidance.
Forrester’s 2026 State of Business Buying report — based on surveys of nearly 18,000 global business buyers — found that buyers validate AI-sourced information against trusted peers and industry sources before acting on it. The comparison content they validate is the content that reads like honest assessment, not competitive positioning.
That validation step also matters for where your comparison content lives. According to Muck Rack’s “What Is AI Reading?” study, 85% or more of non-paid AI citations come from earned media. Your owned comparison content is part of the citation pool, but third-party coverage that frames your brand accurately in comparison to alternatives is structurally stronger in the pool AI draws from.
There’s a reason the comparison citations that move deals tend to originate in trade publications and independent reviews rather than brand-owned content.
AI engines construct comparison frames from across their source pool — and the publications that have earned editorial credibility in your buyers’ industries are the ones AI treats as trustworthy reference points for those frames. When a trade publication or independent analyst writes “for teams that need X, [your brand] is the cleaner choice than [alternatives] because of Y” — that’s a comparison citation sourced to a credible third party that AI can pull with confidence.
Owned comparison content feeds the citation pool. Earned coverage in the right publications sets the frame in the part of the pool AI weights most.
