When a founder or CMO publishes a thought leadership piece on their company website and then wonders why ChatGPT never surfaces their expertise, the answer is structural. The machine is not evaluating the quality of the argument. It is evaluating the trustworthiness of the source domain — and your domain does not yet have the citation history that makes AI engines willing to use it as a source.

Publications like Reuters, the Financial Times, Forbes, and Axios have decades of citation history baked into AI training data. Your company blog has almost none.
Named attribution. Princeton’s GEO research (Aggarwal et al., SIGKDD 2024) measured that content containing direct expert quotations with named attribution increased AI citation visibility by 30 percent compared to unattributed claims. The mechanism is straightforward: attribution makes a claim verifiable. There is a specific type of thought leadership that consistently gets cited in AI search, and it is not what most brands are producing.

The publication gap is this: most B2B brands are investing in owned content that meets none of these criteria. The content that would actually get cited — in the right publications, with named attribution, with supporting data and answer-first structure — is what they are not producing.
A common response to this problem is to try to earn domain authority by producing more high-quality content. This strategy makes sense in traditional SEO. In AI citation, it fundamentally misunderstands the problem.
Domain authority, as AI systems measure it, is a function of citation history accumulated over years or decades. It cannot be manufactured through six months of content investment. The study also found Perplexity drives the largest citation volume of any single AI platform — and Perplexity’s citation patterns are heavily biased toward established editorial domains, not brand-owned properties.
The only practical path to appearing in AI-cited sources is to publish your thought leadership on the domains that already have that authority. Not as paid placement. As earned editorial coverage — the kind where a human editor decides that your executive’s insight is worth publishing.

The gap between theory and execution here is significant. Most companies know they need “media coverage.” Few understand that the media coverage needs to be structured for machine extraction, not just human reach.

The placement is in a publication AI engines trust. Not a trade newsletter with 12,000 subscribers. Not a content marketing platform. Forbes, TechCrunch, Wall Street Journal, Inc., Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, or equivalent domain-authority publications that appear consistently in AI training data. The human audience matters too — but publication selection should be driven by AI citation weight, not just readership.
The executive is named, consistently described, and linked to a consistent point of view. “Jane Chen, CEO of [Company], who has argued for three years that AI search will replace traditional SEO for B2B pipeline” is more citable than “Jane Chen, CEO, says AI is changing marketing.” The specificity of the attribution makes the point of view resolvable across multiple citations.
The piece contains at least one independently verifiable data point. Executive opinion unsupported by named data gets filtered. A byline that opens with “A 2025 Forrester survey found that 70 percent of B2B buyers complete most of their research before contacting a vendor — which is why your brand’s absence from AI-generated answers is a pipeline problem” is extractable. One that opens with “I believe AI is transforming how brands build authority” is not.
The same core insight appears across three or more publications within six to twelve months. Not the same article repurposed. Independently written pieces that attribute a consistent perspective to the same executive. This is the corroboration sequence.

Thought leadership that gets cited by AI is not a content type. It is a distribution outcome. And distribution outcomes in the AI era are determined by a different system than the one that determined SEO outcomes.
That system has a name.
